(To be clear, not a RoughDesign and not my design, but the first building I worked on, and it's philophical under pinnings echo through all my RoughDesigns.)

SERI, and that is the original Solar Energy Research Institute envisioned by Jimmy Carter, was the first facility devoted to ending our dependence on fossil fuel, the first governmental support for Energy Conservation and Alternative Energy, and the first project I worked on.
SERI's first building deserves first place in my gallery of RoughDesigns as it had as rough a time as any building ever designed. The Solar Energy Research Institute's first fledgling facility was designed, re-designed, value engineered, budegt cut, folded, spindled, mutilated, filed, and forgoten, with just a vestige of it's planned glory getting built on litterally, leftover petty cash as a place holder for the many buildings now in the complex.

A long term plan to refurbish, enable it for 4 season use, maximize foul weather usability, all while keeping it as green as the forest it's buried in.

A low energy, low tech, low cost barn.

So much the better for the client to realize his dream.

Prattsville New York - a modest solution (Click here)

Do you feel lucky?

That's what Prattsville New York faces, as do thousands of other small towns across America.  "BIG" solutions, super levees, massive landfills, and moving towns aren't coming from the government anymore.  Of course the government is more than willing to stop anyone from flood proofing their towns, property and homes to "protect the enviornment".  Small town America needs to stand up and tell the powers that be THIS is what we are doing to save our town, our businesses, our homes and DO IT.  It's not budget breaking, a day every year can be enough for many a small town, home or property owner.  The trick is to do it every year and not fight nature, but to learn to live with it, and co-opt it to do most of the work for you.

Retention on a hillside is a challange!

A not so modest solution

Restoring the Swamps of Louisiana -

Using the built enviornment to augment the natural enviornment

Restoring work, income, and meaning to the lives of tens of thousands of those marginalized from disasters, natural, man made, enviornmental and economic, coastal and country wide.

Dream Big America

Have you been in your attic recently, this year, ever?

It's hard to believe what the building might have left out.

Attic access so you can periodically inspect and find leaks and other problems BEFORE they become expensive disasters.

Decent insulation - seems as long as there is anything fluffy, that's all that's needed to sell a house (take a ruler when looking for a home)

Here's a DIY fix for poor insulation, lousy attic access, and some missing tie beams, ekk!

Home Evaluation - Mark II - Imagineering (Click here)

First, we all need to salute "This Old House", Bob Villa, PBS and all the rest who have made fixing up an old home so cool.

Secondly, forget a "Building Evaluation", of course it needs work.  What you need a feasibility study - an idea if, and how your dreams can be realized through Your Old House.

Do It Yourself.

Growing a home.

Modularization.

Sequester your carbon in house!

Well, it's a real fun idea.

Now how to work in a beach and that wave machine?

How did this make it in here?

If you can't get it built, does it matter how cool the design is?
